Job Description
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute seeks an experienced Director of News and Editorial Services to oversee a comprehensive communications program that includes managing the development of Rensselaer news and media relations, contributing to communications strategy, and the production of editorial content for Institute communications vehicles. The Director will facilitate the flow of news and information to a variety of audiences; counsel faculty and administrators on communications strategies; and help coordinate integrated, team-based communications. The Director will play a key role in issue management and emergency communications for the Institute and report to the Vice President for Strategic Communications and External Relations.


Requirements
The Director of News and Editorial Services will have:

• A bachelor's degree is required, with a master's degree preferred, in a field related to communications • A minimum of seven years experience in journalism, public relations or related field. • Demonstrated experience in managing a public relations program, including national media relations

The Director of News and Editorial services will also:

• Be an effective collaborator with a wide variety of campus constituents • Be experienced in raising the positive profile of an organization; and have proven editorial skills • Have the ability to serve as the Institute's representative and spokesperson in a variety of venues.

The following qualifications are highly desired:

• Master's degree • Related management experience at a university, government agency, research laboratory, or scientific society.

The minimimum knowledge, skills and abilities needed by the Director of News and Editorial Services are the following:

• Requires excellent oral and written communication skills. • Requires strong organizational skills. • Requires excellent interpersonal skills • Requires strong analytical skills and ability to interpret data. • Requires ability to work effectively under pressure and meet established goals and objectives. • Requires ability to work with a diverse population. • Requires strong computer skills and knowledge.

Additional required knowledge, skills and abilities are:

• Skill in establishing priorities • Strong interpersonal skills • Ability to use independent judgment and to gather, manage and impart information to the media and various other internal and external audiences. • Requires an ability to design, implement, and continuously improve programs and processes that achieve outcomes. • Requires a commitment to developing department staff, collaborating with Institute partners, and serving external customers.
